How to Arrange Furniture in A Small Bedroom to Make It Look Bigger

June 11, 2018 By: Administrator Category: Bedroom, Furniture Ideas

Arranging your furniture in a small bedroom is essentially a piece of cake, really. Because in actuality, any bedroom will become big enough if you can manage to arrange your furniture meticulously and in a perfect way. There are many things you can try and work out to make your small bed room feel big enough to you.

First things first, you have to make sure that your furniture which are possible to be side-on-side with your bedroom’s wall are pushed against it. Like your twin beds, for example, they should be put by being pushed against the wall. Well, you are not gonna be using the bed all day, are you? You can also try to be multifunction. Which means that you can place your bureau next to the bed and use it as a nightstand. You also can use a kitchen chair as a nightstand. You can even make your chair to be a place for you to hang your clothes, coat, or purse.

Next, try as hard as possible to replace your furniture. Try it like this:

  • Attach a small shelf, on the wall next to the bed, to use as a nightstand. It should be attached on your wall, do not put it in the middle of your bedroom or even beside your desk or bed, it’ll just waste your bedroom space.
  • Use a wall lamp rather than a table lamp, which means you attach it on your floor. So, what I’m trying to say is that things you attach on your wall will make your room bigger than things you put on your floor do.
  • Store tissue and an alarm clock in a small purse hung on a hook next to the bed. But don’t forget that your purse should be cute-looking and clean enough. Cause if the purse is dirty it’ll imply that what you hang on the hook is a trash can.
  • Attach a folding shelf, beneath a window, to use as a desk or ironing board. This will save space even more, since you don’t iron every day. Even though you might study every day, you won’t be needing the desk all day.
  • Use a stool instead of a chair. Or, if it’s not possible, use a small chair instead of a big one.  If you use a a stool, store it in your closet when it’s not in use.
  • Or, if you want to save more place, you can sit on the floor. Use a floor cushion or study on the bed, instead of bothering yourself to place a desk plus a chair.

And then, don’t forget to find and use smaller pieces of furniture. For example, use a smaller bed, a smaller shelf, a smaller desk, a smaller fan, and other possible smaller things instead of big ones. But, in case you are a girl, you can use a big enough closet and a huge mirror.

Next, you should add more storage area. Clear the clutter. Keep only what you use. So if for example, you hardly use your cushion, never let it lay on your floor when you’re not using it. You can also try and add shelves or hooks in the closet. Use those hooks and shelves to place small items in baskets or boxes. You can even elevate your bed, cause it’ll save place even more than putting your bed directly attached on the floor. Use cardboard storage boxes beneath the bed. And don’t forget to add a bed skirt to cover everything beneath it to make it look neater.

The last thing you have to do is to maintain your room. Keep your bed neat and clean your room every day. Repeat; every day. Keep everything put in the right place. Because all of the previous tips won’t work unless you keep them that way; clean and neat.

How to Refinish Veneer Kitchen Cabinets

June 10, 2018 By: Administrator Category: Kitchen

Well, having veneer in your house can get messy quickly if you don’t know how to take care of it. Since cracked veneer can’t be fixed, and the surface can build up with grim, there isn’t much you can do to keep it looking like new. But, with the right preparation, you can learn how to paint it so it looks brand new.

First off, you need to fix any problems with the veneer, use wood glue to affix veneer back to the original surface. Unfortunately cracked or missing pieces of veneer cannot be fixed. You will need to remove the damaged piece and glue a new piece in its place.

Clean the surface with hot water removing any grease or grime. A simple solution containing a few drops of dish soap should work, do not saturate the surface. Please note that if the veneer is cracked, peeling or missing you should hold off on cleaning and fix this problem first as veneer is usually covering particle board (MDF) which breaks down when wet.

After drying, lightly sand the veneer (do not sand through veneer) and use tack cloth to remove all of the dust created on the surface. You may also want to clean up any dust around the surface to be painted or you have the potential to have the dust blow into your fresh paint.

Apply primer at least 2 coats. Allow to dry for 24 hours. You may need to sand between coats of primer, depends on smoothness of surface desired. Apply paint, 2 coats for light paint, generally more for darker colors. Lastly, seal with 2-4 coats of varnish if the surface is going to be used as a work surface.

If you have wood-veneer cabinets, different thing would work with the refinishing. The surfaces of these cabinets are real wood, but they generally can’t be sanded down for staining, because you risk taking off the veneer and exposing the sub-material. However, veneer surfaces can be re-glossed, which is often enough to brighten them up and provide a new look. Things you will need, screwdriver, newspapers, 100-grit sandpaper, 120-grit sandpaper, polyeurethane gloss and Brushes.

Firstly, remove the cabinet doors and set them on newspapers on the floor. Remove all hinges and hardware with a screwdriver and set it aside.
Next, lightly sand the entire surface of the cabinets and doors with 100-grit sandpaper. Sand it just enough to take off the shine of the old gloss, without going all the way down to the wood surface. Wipe the sanding dust off everything.

And then, starting at the top of the cabinets, use your brush to apply a light layer of gloss to the wood. Brush with the grain of the wood in short, slow strokes, avoiding drips and bubbles. Let it dry for a day. Then lightly buff the new gloss with 120-grit sandpaper, just enough to take off the shine. Apply a second coat of gloss in the same manner as the first. Let it dry. Then apply a third coat in the same way, buffing the gloss and brushing on a thin, new layer. After it dries, put the cabinet doors and hardware back on.

Small Bathroom Remodel Ideas on a Budget

June 10, 2018 By: Administrator Category: Bathroom

The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in your home. Nearly everyone spends time in the bathroom before leaving the house. Your bathroom should be a space that you enjoy being in, no matter how small. If you find your bathroom cramped or cluttered, you can make a few small changes that will quickly transform it without ruining your budget.

Remodeling a small bathroom requires a lot of planning to ensure that your budget is used wisely. When it comes to small spaces, choosing the right accessories can impact the look and feel of the space more than anything else.

First, check your cabinet hardware. If your bathroom cabinets are old and tired looking and you can’t afford new ones, there’s still a cheap and easy way to freshen them up. Purchase new cabinet handles and drawer pulls. Nowadays there is a wealth of strikingly decorative cabinet hardware that will take attention away from the outdated cupboards and drawers and act as a distinctive finishing touch for the entire bathroom. Consider selecting cabinet hardware that matches the color of the paint on your walls as it will help bring the room together.

Then take a look at your shower curtain and rug. They are two articles that can quickly take a beating from frequent use. The shower curtain can turn cloudy and the bath mat rug can lose its bright color and fluffiness.

Purchasing a new, crisp shower curtain and a new, soft rug are easy ways to freshen up your bathroom immediately. Select curtain and mat colors that either match your walls or that contrast in a harmonious way.

Beside that, you need to reduce the scale of the accessories and furniture in the bathroom. The bigger the items are, the smaller the bathroom will feel. This is especially true of crowded corners, overstuffed sinks and windowsills and large laundry hampers or containers. Just by replacing these items for a smaller version, you can gain enough space to add other items or to replace the tub or extend the shower.

Don’t forget take out the tub and make do with just a shower. This will increase the available space considerably and allow you to add additional furniture for storage. A shower curtain will make the space look even bigger, since you can leave it slightly open to show the added space behind it. If you prefer sliding doors, make them glass.

You can also try and add a large mirror. If you can’t change your vanity mirror, add track lights on top to give the impression of a larger reflection or place a second mirror on the opposite wall. Make space for candles or add a dimmer switch so you can take a bath in a more peaceful atmosphere.
If you consider to repaint or retile, use light colors. If white or light blue feel too simple, consider adding splashes of color by introducing a contrasting tile once in a while or painting a border to separate wall from ceiling.
